Every small step in newborn care creates a lifetim Every small step in newborn care creates a lifetime of possibilities.

For Dr. Kelvin Sawe of Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, the Tiny Feet Big Steps Neonatology Conference experience was both professionally and personally transformative:

“TFBS has strengthened my passion for neonatal and neurosurgical care, reminding me that every newborn life deserves a chance. Meeting dedicated professionals and mentors committed to improving neonatal outcomes despite challenges has been both inspiring and transformative.”

His words reflect what makes Tiny Feet Big Steps so special—bringing together a community of clinicians and mentors who are committed to improving care for mothers and newborns across Africa.

Stories like Dr. Sawe’s remind us that investing in people is one of the most powerful ways to improve newborn survival. Together, we are taking tiny feet and making big steps toward a future where every newborn has the opportunity to thrive.

At the Tiny Feet, Big Steps Neonatology Conference At the Tiny Feet, Big Steps Neonatology Conference, healthcare providers from across Africa came together to learn lifesaving skills that help newborns survive and thrive. For first-time instructor Richard Businge, the experience was both humbling and inspiring.

"Teaching participants who didn't speak my primary language reminded me that while words may differ, the goal is the same. Our common language was the commitment to learning lifesaving skills for newborn babies."

Richard witnessed healthcare professionals grow in confidence and competence as they practiced skills that will directly impact the lives of babies and families in their communities.

His experience highlights the power of education, collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving newborn care. Thanks to the support of our partners and donors, programs like Tiny Feet, Big Steps are equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills needed to save lives across Africa.

A Message of Gratitude from the ICHA Team Because A Message of Gratitude from the ICHA Team

Because of your generosity, children, mothers, and healthcare professionals across Tanzania are experiencing hope, healing, and opportunity.
In this short video, members of the ICHA team share their heartfelt thanks for your support. Every donation and every act of encouragement has helped advance life-saving neonatal care, train healthcare professionals, and open the doors of the Arusha Pediatric & Maternal Care Centre (APMC)—the first dedicated outpatient pediatric and maternal specialty clinic of its kind in Tanzania.

Your partnership is making a lasting difference. Together, we are strengthening healthcare systems, equipping local medical professionals, and improving access to quality care for mothers, newborns, and children. Most importantly, your support is helping provide critical care for vulnerable babies in the NICU, giving more newborns the chance to survive and thrive.

Thank you for being part of this story. Your support is not simply funding programs—it is helping save lives in the NICU, strengthening communities, and creating brighter futures for children and families across Tanzania.

We are deeply grateful for the incredible support We are deeply grateful for the incredible support shown at our From First Breath to Bright Futures fundraiser. It was a wonderful evening surrounded by family, friends, Board members, Tiny Feet Big Steps instructors, healthcare professionals from across the Twin Cities, and members of our local faith communities. Your encouragement, friendship, and commitment to improving newborn care in Africa mean more than words can express.

Together, we celebrated the impact being made through the work of the Institute for Child Healthcare Africa—training African doctors and nurses, supporting life-saving NICU care for premature and critically ill babies, expanding the reach of the Tiny Feet Big Steps neonatology conferences, and advancing care through the newly opened Arusha Pediatric & Maternal Care Centre in Tanzania. Through these efforts, more clinicians are being equipped, more hospitals are being impacted, and more newborn lives are being saved.

We are thrilled to see Every Breath Counts being u We are thrilled to see Every Breath Counts being used in hospitals across Africa to support the care of newborns and children.

Recently, Dr. Dorcas Naa Dedei Aryeetey shared this photo with Dr. Felicia Duopa Okyere, Senior Specialist Pediatrician at St. Patrick's Hospital, a district hospital located in Offinso-Maase in Ghana's Ashanti Region.

Dr. Dorcas told us:
"Yesterday, while revising the management plan for some of our babies, we were discussing their care and I asked my boss that we compare notes from the Tiny Feet Big Steps Protocol Book – Every Breath Counts – and review our care plan."

Moments like these remind us why we created Every Breath Counts: to provide practical, evidence-based guidance that helps healthcare teams deliver the best possible care for newborns and children.

We are grateful to the dedicated clinicians, nurses, and healthcare teams across Africa who are using this resource every day to improve outcomes for their youngest patients.

Our Tiny Feet Big Steps Neonatology Conference bro Our Tiny Feet Big Steps Neonatology Conference brought together doctors and nurses from across Africa and around the world for a week of learning, collaboration, and encouragement. But TFBS is about more than gaining NICU skills — it’s about building a growing community united by a shared mission to care for the smallest and most vulnerable babies.

As Dr. Steve Swanson shared:
“TFBS (and ICHA) is not an organization or NGO as much as it is a family of people with shared NICU experiences and a passion to teach and love on our learners. I believe our TFBS impact goes far beyond just the transfer of knowledge or learning of NICU skills… rather, we are building relationships and creating an entirely new form of safe, interactive learning.”

In the days following the conference, our WhatsApp group filled with messages from attendees safely returning home:
“Safely in Ebb.”
“Zimbabwe group we reached home safe and sound.”
“The Gabon team has just arrived home.”
“Nkhoma Mission Hospital, Malawi team has arrived safely back home.”
“South Sudan team have arrived in Juba today and we will proceed to our final destinations tomorrow morning. Thanks to African Mission Healthcare and ICHA/TFBS”
“Our Lady of Lourdes Mutomo Mission team arrived in Kenya safely.”

These messages are a reminder that TFBS is not just an event. It is a network of friendships, mentorship, encouragement, and hope that now stretches across many countries — all working together to improve neonatal care for babies and families.
